Asia Food Ratings Study 2026: What 419,000 Google Maps Reviews Say

What are the best-rated food experiences in Asia — according to the people who actually went? To find out, we analyzed the ratings behind every verified guide on WokFeed: 92 top-rated food experiences across 12 Asian cities, backed by 419,103 aggregated Google Maps reviews (data collected January–July 2026). No editors’ hunches,. Three findings surprised us.

Key findings

  • 1. Asia’s best-rated food experience isn’t a restaurant. Of the 12 experiences holding a perfect 5.0 rating (with 500+ reviews), 9 are cooking classes or food tours — not restaurants. Travelers consistently rate learning to cook a cuisine above almost any meal.
  • 2. Busan out-rates Seoul. South Korea’s second city tops our city league at an average 4.97, edging out the capital (4.95). Smaller food cities punch above their weight across the board.
  • 3. Hong Kong is Asia’s toughest crowd. The city’s flagship spots average 4.60 — the lowest in our league — despite world-class food. High expectations, harsh graders.

The city league: Asia’s food cities ranked by verified rating

Cities with at least 3 deep-dive verified guides. “Avg rating” is the mean Google Maps rating of each guide’s flagship pick; “Reviews” is the total review volume behind those picks.

9 of 12 are hands-on experiences. The pattern holds across every country in the study: when travelers cook the cuisine themselves, they walk away happier than after almost any restaurant meal. If you’re planning an Asia food trip, book one cooking class — the data says it will likely be your highest point.

More numbers from the study

  • Median flagship rating: 4.9 — 48 of 92 verified guides have a 4.9-rated top pick; 18 hold a perfect 5.0.
  • Most-reviewed single spot: Hoang’s Restaurant, Hanoi — 30,358 reviews at 4.9.
  • Ratings floor: nothing below 4.4 makes it into a WokFeed verified guide — by design.

Methodology

WokFeed guides are built by cross-checking every recommendation against live Google Maps ratings and review counts, then re-verifying on a rolling basis. This study aggregates the flagship (highest-rated) pick from each of our 92 verified guides across 12 cities with 3+ guides, weighting nothing — the numbers are shown as found. Review totals reflect the moment of verification (Jan–Jul 2026). Full process: how we verify. Data on individual picks lives inside each city and dish guide, and beginner context is in our First-Timer Food Guides.
